In April 2023, "Proof of X – Blockchain As A New Medium For Art" was held at THE FACE DAIKANYAMA in Tokyo. This exhibition focused on blockchain and smart contracts, the foundational technologies supporting NFT art. Conceived as a sequel to the 2022 exhibition "Proof of X – NFT as New Media Art," it sought to reconsider NFTs not merely as digital assets but as a new medium for artistic expression.
Blockchain technology enables high transparency and reliability through decentralized networks, while smart contracts autonomously execute processes such as ownership, sales, and distribution. These technologies support not only the creation and circulation of NFT works but also introduce new possibilities for the nature of art itself.
The exhibition presented works known as "Dynamic NFTs" and "Programmable NFTs," whose states and visuals change in response to external data or user behavior. These works challenge the notion of art as a fixed object, instead positioning it as an entity that continuously evolves through its relationship with code and networks, thereby illustrating an expansion of expression in the blockchain era.
Beyond the fervor and fluctuations surrounding the NFT market, the exhibition provided an opportunity to reconsider the essential value and social potential of the underlying technology. It examined transformations in traditional relationships among artists, audiences, collectors, and curators, attending to both the creativity and risks generated by transparent code execution. By situating NFTs within a complex digital ecosystem, the exhibition envisioned new forms of art and society beyond them.
