From January 12 to 14, 2024, the exhibition "Proof of X - Decoding PFP Culture" was held at GALLERY X BY PARCO in Shibuya PARCO, Tokyo. This exhibition focused on "PFP" (Profile Picture), digital profile images used on social media and platforms, exploring their cultural and social significance from multiple perspectives. It was part of the art and technology event "DIG SHIBUYA 2024," co-hosted by Shibuya Ward. Admission was free, and related talk events were held during the exhibition period.
The exhibition addressed themes such as digital identity expression, internet culture, financialization phenomena, meme culture, character representation, and communities including DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). Against the backdrop of blockchain technology development, PFP as a form of NFT has formed a unique cultural domain and evolved. The exhibition aimed to decode the meaning of this culture by examining both its possibilities and challenges.
Participating artists included Akihiro Kato, CryptoCitizens (Bright Moments), CryptoPunks, int art, Kai Yoshizawa + Baku Hashimoto + MASSAGE MAGAZINE, KUMALEON, Milady Maker, Mitchell F. Chan, Nahiko, NIINOMI, PIV, and Toshi, among others. The exhibition featured works that reflected the transformation of digital identity and the current state of community formation, allowing visitors to experience the multifaceted aspects of PFP culture.
Positioned as a symbol of the fusion between Shibuya's cultural assets and technology, the exhibition was part of "DIG SHIBUYA 2024," which introduces cutting-edge culture domestically and internationally. It provided an opportunity to deepen understanding of identity expression in the digital age.
